I should have read this page more carefully before purchasing the phone, because it took quite a lot of persistence to return it. =)

I'm not 100% sure I understood them correctly, but I believe the Nokia Care tech and rep in Kunming were telling me that a software re-flash wouldn't work, which implies a hardware difference.

<strong>Nokia N82</strong>

I owned a Mainland Chinese Nokia N82 for two days, which I purchased for 4180 yuan ($575.84) from a Zhongyu Telecom embedded inside the Kunming Jin Ma Fang (金马坊) Park & Shop.Warning about the Chinese N82

@ Shopgirl: the iPhone is a beautiful piece of hardware, but Chinese texting (and texting in general) is poor on the versions on the market today. There's also that whole no-warranty-in-China thing to worry about.

@ Wesley: I'm not certain about that yet. If it's only disabled in software, I could bypass the block by flashing a new bios using Nemesis Software Suite. On the other hand, if it's disabled in the hardware, I'm obviously SOL. I seem to recall that the N95 had some models that were hardware-disabled and some that were software-disabled. The most annoying thing in this may not be the loss of the WiFi so much as the fact that Nokia doesn't discount the price of the N82 (or N95 or N93) to make up for this lost feature.
